Nicholas Nicklebys father dies and he, Kate-his sister, and their mother traveled to London to seek the aid of their relative, Ralph Nickleby. Ralph grudgingly provides his sister-in-law and Kate a place to stay and makes Nicholas work for Wackford Squeers.

Nicholas endures the mistreatment at the school Squeers runs but an event led to Nicholas fleeing the school.

Meanwhile, Kate was being assaulted so Nicholass friend asked him to come.

Once in London, Nicholas overhears Kates assailants boasting and attacks them. He moves his mother and sister to new lodgings.

However, the future looks bleak, for Nicholas couldnt find work in London, and Ralph together with Squeers plots more pain for Nicholas.
